much space showing between the spokes of my new SSR wheels, that I decided to spruce up the appearance of my front brake calipers. The day was perfect, about 70 degrees, mostly sunny, light wind. I bought CRC Brakleen and a small brass wire brush. I only spent a couple of minutes spraying and scrubbing each caliper. I removed the brake shoes. Didn't go crazy on the newspaper, but used enough. Just stuff one sheet down in the hole where the caliper pots are, cover the discs, and a couple more sheets around the edge of the fender well. I didn't need any special tools to compress the calipers when removing and replacing the pads. I had to lightly tap one back in with a hammer and screwdriver after I was done painting. I used Plasti-Kote Brake Caliper Paint, which I think is the same thing as their engine paint with just a different label. The paint needs to be heat resistant. I applied about six coats, waiting five to ten minutes between coats. The metal didn't start to look bright red until about the fourth coat. I chose red to match my car. Their Bright Red paint was an excellent match to my Aztec Red car. I waited about 45 minutes before I sanded off the "Nissan" emblem using a wood sanding block and 220 grit automotive sanding paper. The paint was still a little soft but I was on a schedule. You must use a small wood sanding block to get the control you need to remove the paint from the Nissan letters without scratching the rest of the paint job. I put masking tape over the letters and did a final paint touch up after the sanding. The look is ghetto-fabulous! Pics to follow soon.
